A Stags Leap Original

It was 1964, Richard Steltzner discovered an old prune ranch on the east side of Silverado Trail, sitting on a bench land just below the Stags Leap Palisades. An invitation to lunch by neighbor Nathan Fay changed his course forever.  Upon tasting the quality of wine, Richard was convinced to plant Cabernet Sauvignon in his vineyard just across the way.

Steltzner Vineyards went on to grow grapes for some of the most iconic wines in Napa Valley’s history. The 1972 Clos Du Val Cabernet Sauvignon, which placed in the famed Judgment in Paris. Joseph Phelps inaugural vintage of the ground breaking proprietary wine Insignia, vineyards designates by Spring Mountain, among others.  Dick went on to help establish the renowned region of Stags Leap District, while making his own wines for decades under his eponymous label.
